Our Projects

and Initiatives

We lead a variety of community-driven projects and initiatives focused on food education, reducing food insecurity, meeting immediate food needs, youth engagement, economic opportunities for local farmers and food producers. By investing in these efforts, we are building a healthier, more sustainable future for McDowell County.

Ready, Set, Grow!

Led by science educator Renata Crawley, this program brought hands-on agricultural learning to students at West Marion Elementary and Foothills Community School. Students explored topics like insects, pollinators, seed saving, soil care, and North Carolina’s diverse agricultural regions. The impact was clear—100% of students passed post-lesson testing, with 84% scoring 90 or above, all students gave positive feedback.

Outreach Cabinets

Through our Outreach Cabinet program, we source nutrient dense, shelf stable and ready-to-eat food for partner organizations that serve the unhoused and housing insecure in our county. This food nourishes individuals while breaking down barriers, allowing our partners—McDowell Impact and Mission Ministries Alliance—to connect with folks more easily and provide essential healthcare such as medical treatment, harm reduction & recovery services, compassionate care, counseling, and access to community-based support.

Pantry & Partner Support

We support local pantries and partner organizations by providing fresh, locally grown produce and shelf-stable foods—always free of cost. This ensures that the individuals and families they serve have consistent access to nutritious, high-quality food. By working together, we strengthen our local food system, increase the amount of farmer food purchased and help build a healthier, community for everyone.
